DfT set to allow fully Automated Vehicles on UK roads

DfT set to allow fully Automated Vehicles on UK roads

The Government is to develop a process to support ‘advanced trials’ of autonomous vehicles which indicates we are stepping closer to the possibility of driverless cars without a safety operative being present.

The Department of Transport (DfT) have recently published an updated document on ‘Automated Vehicle Trialling’, which states that the law currently requires ‘a driver or operator, in or out of the vehicle, who is ready, able, and willing to resume control of the vehicle’. It also adds they are aware of the desire of these new automated technologies. It highlights topics such as conducting trials safely and responsibly, improving transparency of trials and engaging with people when planning the trials. These advanced trails may need the involvement of the DfT for the trailing to proceed as these trials currently land outside of the law.

In conclusion, the Department’s motoring agencies will create and run a process to support advanced trials on public roads.
