Local Authorities to Introduce Clean Air Zones

Local Authorities to Introduce Clean Air Zones

Evidence shows that spending time in regions with high levels of air pollution can worsen symptoms of asthma, damage our lungs and can impact our life expectancy.

Some local authorities will be introducing the Clean Air Charging Zone (CAZ) to reduce air pollution and protect the health of everyone in Leeds, Birmingham & London. It can be confined to a single road or a area of a city in which the government declares or considers is an area that requires a CAZ.

If your vehicle exceeds emission standards, it is possible you’ll have to pay a charge when you drive within these clean air zones.

There are some national and local exemptions from the charge. You’re automatically entitled to a national exemption, and do not have to pay a charge, if you have a:

  • vehicle that’s ultra low emission
  • disabled passenger tax class vehicle
  • military vehicle
  • historic vehicle
  • vehicle retrofitted with technology accredited by the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)
You can find out more about local exemptions from the local authority in the area you’re driving in.
