Exploring #VanLife with ECCO

From driving through a snowy mountain pass to crisscrossing dusty backroads in the desert, the van life is not for the faint of heart. For Tyler Fredrickson of Linden, UT and his family, the arduous journey and ever-changing destinations are all worth it. Safety is a top priority when exploring the wilderness, so Tyler regularly services his van and equips ECCO worklights to stay on the trail and find the next campsite.
Driving an “adventure van” is not just a hobby, it is a way of life. Look up #VanLife on any social media platform and you find scrappy folks enjoying the outdoors and living way off the grid. Working with RB Components, Tyler upfit his van to meet the needs of his family and to accommodate the types of trips he plans to take. RB installed a complement of ECCO [EW2441s](https://www.eccoesg.com/us/en/products/worklights/light-duty-worklights/ew2440-series) to create a perimeter of white light. The worklights provide some much-needed visibility in extreme locations and volatile weather conditions. They are easy to install and draw very few amps, which make the EW2441s ideal for these types of applications.
“When I turn them on, I’m like a UFO out there,” remarked Tyler about his lights. He kicks them on with a foot switch when he needs to navigate the pitch-black backcountry. Apparently, the LEDs come in handy when driving from Banff to Lake Louise in Alberta Canada at two in the morning.
“There’s also a sense of security,” Tyler added. When parked in the middle of nowhere in the quiet darkness with your family, there is something comforting about a blanket of white light. The feeling of safety often extends beyond the more practical uses for lighting devices.
Tyler recommends current and aspiring Van Lifers to upfit extra lighting on their vehicle of choice. When deciding what equipment should be installed, Tyler recommends, “Figure out the primary use for the Van; where you’re going and what you’re using it for.” The build for a family that enjoys camping is probably going to be completely different for a lifestyle blogger or semi-pro snowboarder.
Form follows function when considering power use and wiring. Perhaps an extra [switch](https://www.eccoesg.com/us/en/products/accessories/switches-and-controls) is needed at the rear of the vehicle to find cargo and equipment. Maybe a [low-glow](https://www.eccoesg.com/us/en/products/worklights/medium-duty-worklights/ew2102-equinox-series) function would be handy to illuminate tripping hazards at night without creating too much light pollution.
