The future of automotive safety

The ECCO Safety Group was recently recognized as a Finalist in the “Commercialized Innovation of the Year” category at the Idaho Innovation Awards for its work with the Electric Vehicle Alert System (EVAS). The annual event draws over 650 business and community leaders from around the state to celebrate the professionals and companies leading Idaho’s expanding tech sector. From the Gem State to global markets, ESG’s latest development highlights its continued commitment to improve roadway safety.

“The engineers really deserve credit for developing EVAS from the ground up,” commented Product Manager Jeff Turpen who represented ESG at the event. Jeff is leading the charge for the system and developing leads, which include electric and autonomous vehicle manufacturers as well as public transportation companies. Jeff believes that EVAS will change the way we think about audible warning. “Our alarms are progressing from tonal, to multi-frequency, to a multi-faceted and customized sound design,” he concluded.

Over the last few years, many electric and hybrid vehicles have quietly entered our roads and neighborhoods. Without a traditional internal combustion engine, some of the electric vehicles are so quiet they are often difficult to recognize, which can be hazardous for surrounding vehicles and nearby pedestrians. EVAS is one solution to this problem. Designed for electric and hybrid vehicles, EVAS emits an audible warning for a 360° perimeter of safety.

As an established Idaho Innovator with over forty years’ experience in designing and manufacturing backup alarms, the EVAS is a natural extension of ESG’s current product line. EVAS is a modular platform with customization options that works with the vehicle’s CANBus network. We partnered with a recording studio to produce a library of approved tones and audio profiles allowing each vehicle manufacturer to engineer their fleet’s unique sound and audible brand identity.

Governments in Europe, China and the United States have all seen a need for alert systems like EVAS and have drafted regulations regarding these devices and the scope of their application. ESG’s EVAS meets and exceeds all domestic and international requirements.
